Mahavilachchiya village is situated in Anuradhapura District. The people who are living in here are usually doing cultivation as their main occupation. They mainly entered to the Rice cultivation because they have many facilities to it than others. Mainly there is a big tank in the middle of village and it gives the water for all the villagers’ works. From this the villagers cultivate 2 times in one year and this 2 time is calling ‘Yala’ and ‘Maha’.
Not only the rice cultivation, but also they are doing chena cultivation too. Especially this cultivation is doing in the rainy season and they get water for their cultivations from rain. Usually they cultivate chilies, green gram, Indian corn, peanut and etc. In the end of this season farmers are living in the chena at the night too to protect their crops. They are actually spent the night in a hut in Chena and it is a very dangerous work because wild elephant or some other thing can harm him. We hear news like that always.
Rice cultivation also a difficult work but the people in this village have to enter it because they haven’t any other occupations. Now you know that people are entering to rice cultivation in 2 times of the year. They entered for it in April – May in this year too. And now they are hoping to get harvest from it. In this season the technology has developed and the people, who cut paddy by their own hands, are now put a machine for all those works. And also we had to wait for half of a day to clean paddy and get harvest. But now it is also developed and now we can get harvest from half of hour from a machine. The most important thing in this season is Mahavilachchiya is the only village which gets harvest from rice cultivation in this month and other villages are still not ready for that. Because of that, villagers can sell their harvest for a good price and they can get enough money for their effort. So in this season farmers are very happy and they will put much weight for it in next time too to get maximum harvest from their cultivation.
